Private Residence – The Garden
In this rural Hampshire Garden, plants were meticulously selected for the country house terraces, forming an integral part of the landscape. An existing stone wall provided an ideal backdrop for a long border that overlooks the fields, while two yew topiaries were retained as gateposts to the broader landscape. The repetition of plants ensured a cohesive flow throughout the space, with taller ornamental grasses and perennials adding a higher layer and strong architectural forms, especially in the colder months.
The planting design harmonized the garden with its rural Hampshire setting. Two spacious central beds, designed as mirror images, showcased cohesion and intent when viewed from both ground and first-floor levels. Evergreen rounded shrubs served as anchor points, left unclipped for a more relaxed form, and were complemented by herbs, soft, hazy perennials, ornamental grasses, and bulbs in shades of lilac, soft yellow, silver, and white. Drought-tolerant species were chosen to take advantage of the south-facing aspect. A new border linked the upper terrace to the lower lawn, featuring delicate mauves and lemon shades, while a gentle screen of towering ornamental grasses provided a captivating view. The sculptural form of existing mature trees enhanced the overall scheme, imparting a sense of history and place.
Stone pots filled with simple evergreens lined the steps and edges of the terrace, grounding the space and ensuring continuity throughout the garden. The result is a serene, calm expanse filled with pollinators, enjoyed daily by the family. The garden, with its thoughtful design and selection of plants, has become a tranquil retreat that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, offering beauty and tranquillity year-round.
